OH CANADA! I will be driving up to Niagara Falls bright and early on Friday morning with my girlfriend. Then we have an airbnb up in Toronto where we will be spending labor day weekend and heading home Monday afternoon. I am of course bringing my Miata so hopefully the weather is not too much colder up there and the rain stays away. Definitely going to try some poutine, going to a drive in movie theater, exploring the city, and taking a drive up to check out Big Chute. Very happy the Canadian dollar is tanking at the moment so my USD will certainly go a lot further (sorry for the Canadians that are coming to the US though).

I last was in Canada about 6 years ago and I just thought it was really pretty (I was somewhere in Ontario but not sure where exactly). Also, there was so much national pride that it was eerie to me. Flags on every building, much more so than I am used to in the US. And every person I met was literally the nicest person in the world. Everyone was so courteous and that was the most foreign part to me haha. Anyways, I am looking forward to the adventure!

If you want Montreal style smoked meat while you’re in Toronto, hit up Caplansky’s on College, just west of Spadina. It’s great stuff.

Somewhat related story.

Last week I was in Banff AB and there was this group from North Carolina in their 50’s I would say sitting at the table next to me in a restaurant. These were the most ignorant mother fuckers I’ve ever seen I was ready to tell them to leave Canada and don’t come back.

One lady went on a huge rant to the waiter on how stupid Canada was for using celsius instead of fahrenheit. When it came time to pay the one lady paid with US dollars and made a huge ass scene when she received change in Canadian dollars. She went livid on the waiter. The waiter kept calm but he was “When I visit the states I pay with US dollars and expect US dollars back. I don’t pay with foreign currency and get mad when I get local currency in return.” There is literally thousands of place they could of exchanged their money for local currency but they felt so damn superior that everyone would just cater to their every need.

When you visit a country don’t expect it to be the same as where you came from. If you want what you came from why did you leave in the first place.

Not pointing any fingers at you at all I’m just saying that Canadians don’t take kindly to unnecessary disrespect. We’ll apologize to you the whole way to the border while drinking maple syrup from a flask. eh?

When in Toronto looking for some night time entertainment go to zanzibar Tavern, I’m only half joking.. Also kensington market district has a lot of neat places and things going on. the back alleys esp if you’re into the greener side of life. of course soo much good food in that city too.

Since you’re going to Big Chute, try this route after. Bala is beautiful, 13 is a good Miata road. It's supposed to be pretty warm this weekend so I've led you to a goot swimming hole at the end of it :)

Oh god that story makes me cringe! Yeah, I definitely want to experience the culture and such as is, being disrespectful is a huge no-no to me so I will be avoiding things like that. As far as currency, I planned to just go to the ATM when I cross the border and withdraw some of those Canadian dollars. Any specific points of courtesy I should keep in mind in Canada?

It’s just really well done. You also end up with a sandwich that’s rye bread, mustard, and meat that’s four inches thick. They also make pretty good poutine.

Nope as long as you’re on the same playing field as everyone else we welcome travellers with open arms. The second you think you are better than us because you do something differently that’s when the problem arises. We are far from perfect but we a tolerant as fuck to different cultures/opinions as long as they are not disrespectful (ex: Canada is stupid because of ____ .) You can think it but please don’t shout it out in public.

Keep it respectful and you should have no problems whatsoever fitting in.

But this group sure as hell filled the “arrogant american stereotype” perfectly (that’s not a good thing).

Yeah I like to think of Canada as the overly friendly neighbors so I would never want to disrespect them like that. I imagine common sense is key with that!

I do not understand how people survive -40 (F). I love the cold, but shit that is too cold. For me, -10 (F) is like the limit where I start questioning if being dead would be more comfortable.

-40 is the the same in c or f

I live in north western quebec, we had a few -40 days last year, Fucken cold. Cars don’t like it, I don’t like it, but we have to get to work to get paid. just start the car about 10 min in advance, to get the inside warmer. Tires are square for the first 30 seconds.

So my winters are cold and snowy. I do have to pass my (ATV) plow or snowblower sometime sin that cold, that’s why I got a real -40 snowmobile suit. I can stay outside for about an hour, then need 2 to warm up.

Funny, we actually didn’t even end up on Big Chute, but going on Route 13 was great! That road was definitely a “Miata road” and was well worth the trip up there. Would have liked to do Big Chute too but we got a late start (didn’t leave the house until like noon lol). Thanks for the suggestion!
